Father and son face jail for cock fighting

A father and son from Sussex are facing jail after the police recently broke one of the biggest cock fighting operations that was taking place in the UK. It is possible that the pair could be sentenced to 6 months in prison each as they are facing nearly 20 charges of animal cruelty.

An RSPCA investigation found the cock fighting ring that was being run from two farms in Billingshurst. The event was being organised by Mark Giles, as well as his son and they had trained hundreds of birds to fight against each other.

Raids recently took place at the farm, and RSPCA staff reported to the Sussex police that they had found a cock fighting pit. Mobile phone footage was seized at the farm, and diet supplements as well as steroids were found. There were also numerous implements that are used in cock fighting found at the location including metal spurs that are attached to the feet of the birds.

The RSPCA has stated that they are not immediately ruling out the possibility that cock fights took place at the farm which were conducted in front of spectators. However, they’ve stated that there is no firm evidence to prove this just yet, and it is just speculation.

Police officers have stated that it is clear that the scale of the operation was large, and that it has been going on for many years. It was also the case that it was very well hidden, as the neighbours were generally unaware of what was happening on the property right next to them.

There were 500 different animals discover that the farm, including nearly 100 fighting birds which were fully mature. These 100 animals had to be put down by the RSPCA because they were too violent to be put in a pen with other birds.
