Free Health Checks in West Sussex

People in Arun, Adur and Worthing are being given the chance to take a free health assessment that could add years to their life.

Health advisors are offering free NHS Health Checks at regular intervals in the run-up to Christmas at a number of venues across the region.

They are available for anyone between 40 and 74, who doesn’t have an existing long-term health condition. All you need to do is call the local team on 01273 268900 and book an appointment at one of the special clinics.

The health checks focus on preventing major causes of illness, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease.

They take around 20 minutes, and will include a blood pressure check, a finger prick blood test and a discussion about family history, smoking status, age and ethnicity, and levels of physical activity.
Helping people to look after their health
Karen Davies, NHS Health Check lead for West Sussex, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer more free NHS Health Checks for people across Arun, Adur and Worthing. It follows on from our success offering the health checks on the high street in Littlehampton throughout the summer, and we hope many more people can access this service.  The NHS Health Check is a great opportunity to make sure that you don’t have any underlying problems which could impact on your health. It is such a quick and simple check and it could add years to your life.”
Find out more at your GP practice or local pharmacy
NHS Health Checks are a national programme and are being offered across West Sussex at participating GP practices and pharmacies.

Karen continued: “Some people may receive their invite to attend their health check at one of the participating GP practices or at their local participating pharmacy, but now we are making it even easier by offering the service in a community venue.  It is so important that everyone eligible takes up the chance to have these free checks, as the types of conditions that the health advisors look for are so often preventable and may not have any symptoms. The NHS Health Check could help flag up any potential warning signs so you can take simple steps to prevent health problems later in life.”
A partnership between health and social care
The checks are being carried out by specialist Health Advisors within the Prevention Assessment Team run by West Sussex County Council and Sussex Community NHS Trust.

Peter Catchpole, County Council Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services, said: “I urge everyone who is eligible for these health checks to take them up. They could prove vital in letting you know what your health needs may be.  The Prevention Assessment Team also offers support to people, advising them about how to keep healthy and manage health issues as well as signpost them to agencies that can help them through practical tasks such as shopping, cleaning and gardening. Plus they have knowledge of local social groups and activities, and transport services available locally.”
