Brighton’s Artist Open Houses Christmas Festival 2013
Weekends  – November 30th to December 15th
This years Artist Open Houses Christmas Festival is to take place in Brighton and Hove, the village of Ditchling in the South Downs, and even further beyond. The festival takes place over the first 3 weekend in December starting on Saturday the 30th November.

During these times more than 50 houses are opening their doors to showcase an amazingly eclectic selection of artworks, and they will all be available to buy directly from the local makers and artists either in their homes or their studios.

As if that wasn’t enough the renowned choreographer Bill Cowie will be bring 3D film installations to the proceedings in a festive collaboration with some of the finest street artists in Brighton, as well as a Polish Christmas and a living artwork of a ceramic house.

The Artist Open Houses are a great way to discover the wealth of creative talent that exists in the city. Expect a fantastic array of graphic prints for the home, as well as paintings, paper cut sculptures and felt toys. You’ll find homewares, knitted artwork, photography, jewellery, ceramics, crafts, toys and textiles. Seasonal attractions include handcrafted Christmas cards, wreaths, tree decorations and foodie gifts.

An afternoon spent browsing Brighton’s Christmas Open Houses is the perfect way to take the pain out of Christmas shopping and a chance to pick up a present or something unique for the home.

Highlights of the 2013 Christmas Festival include:

Centurion! Acclaimed Brighton based Scottish artist, choreographer, writer and filmmaker Billy Cowie, who will be opening his house and presenting life-size 3D film installation projections of his two new dance pieces alongside the work of German artist Silke Mansholt.

Architectural ceramicist J Kay Aplin’s Ceramic House, which was awarded Best Open House 2013. The Ceramic House is an artwork in itself, with walls in every room decorated in Aplin’s beautiful ceramic and glass tiles. In addition, over 15 British and International ceramicists will be exhibiting their work.

New England House, New England Street, Brighton, BN1 4GH

Over 50 artists, designers and makers working in New England House will be exhibiting in different studios around the        building. Highlights include John Dilnot’swildlife inspired mini prints and 3D boxes made from printed papers and found maps, Ken Eardley’s hand made ceramics and Rachel Eardley’s prints, screen prints and jewellery.

Studio 106, 106 Coleridge Street, Hove, East Sussex

A diverse exhibition of the work of 17 artists from Hove’s largest professional artist studios. Participating artists include award-winning fine art photographer Andre Lichtenberg who will be exhibiting his latest body of work, Within Series 11, satirical artist Guy Venables, whose work has appeared in Private Eye, The Spectator and Punch and digital artist Hong Dam whose work has appeared in major feature films including Gladiator and 10,000 BC.

Beastie Toys! The Warehouse Gallery.  An urban smash-up! A festive collaboration of some of Brighton’s finest street artists, showcasing exciting new urban artworks, B-movie themed fun, robots, projections and 3D graffiti sculpture. The Warehouse, 128 Gloucester Road, Brighton BN1 2AF

2 Knoyle featuring the work of 15 artists – 5 of who are  sisters! Ceramicist Angela Evans will be selling her hand made tiles, Jane Dwight will be demonstrating the art of Chinese brush painting (2pm Saturday 7th/ Sunday 8th) and Sarah Lock will be selling her beautiful wooden vintage inspired lights and Christmas baubles.

Cat-Arzyna. Original vintage style pieces for the home, created by Polish designer Cat-arzyna who transforms everyday objects with her unique blend of Polish meets French style of vintage chic. Expect beautiful Christmas decorations made from old sheets of music, embroidered home wares, candles, furniture and much more.

Kitty Finegan’s work is intended to take the viewer on a visual journey through the styles, culture and colour schemes of the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s.
