Regis Classic Car Tour in 2015 dedicating funds to Against Breast Cancer

The annual salary of an Oxford University research student will be sponsored by The Bognor Regis Motor Club, which is dedicating funds raised from the 18th Regis Classic Car Tour in 2015 through the charity, Against Breast Cancer. There is currently no cure for breast cancer that has spread around the body, and Against Breast Cancer is funding research into innovative new treatments that specifically target secondary breast cancer cells, to increase the survival rates of all breast cancer patients.

Iona Easthope is in her final year of a doctorate degree at the Glycoprotein Therapeutics Laboratory, and is developing a technique using an antibody attached to a cell-killing virus to target treatment to secondary breast cancer tumours, no matter how small they may be and regardless of location in the body. If successful, this would enable patients to receive more focused treatment that could clear the body of undetectable microscopic secondary cancer cells before they become life-threatening tumours. Iona says, “We hope to prove that this method is effective at killing cancerous cells without damaging non-cancerous tissue which will improve treatments and disease prognosis for patients with breast cancer, and potentially for patients with other cancer-types too”.

Wendy Taylor-Hill, Director at Against Breast Cancer says “With 1 in 8 women diagnosed nationwide, breast cancer is the most common cancer and claims the lives of 12,000 people a year in the UK due to secondary spread. If we can learn how to detect and destroy secondary breast cancer cells, we can stop people dying of this disease. We are grateful to the Ladies of the Bognor Regis Motor Club for their support since 2007 and for dedicating the funds they raise in 2015 to this research project for designing exciting new, better treatments“.

The Bognor Regis Motor Club has dedicated £16,000 from the proceeds of the 18th Regis Classic Car Tour which is on the 20-22nd March in 2015. Entry fee for the tour is £350 per person and includes meals, 2 nights accommodation at Chilworth Manor in the Southampton countryside as well as a Tulip Road Book, tour plate, commemorative gift, one souvenir photograph of the crew and the services of a very experienced team of marshals. The weekend tour will take in numerous tourist locations throughout Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset such as the Larmer Tree Gardens and WDK Motorsports, and includes a Gala dinner and auction

Against Breast Cancer
Against Breast Cancer is a charity dedicated to funding ground breaking research to improve detection and increase survival after breast cancer diagnosis. Our expert scientists use one of the largest collections of breast cancer patient samples in the UK to look for vital information that could identify the spread of the disease.
More women are surviving breast cancer every year. Against Breast Cancer’s research looks at the whole woman through three interlinked areas of research – biochemistry, immunology, and diet and lifestyle. The charity’s research is studying new ways that could help doctors identify and treat secondary breast cancer faster and more effectively.
The charity’s national Diet & Lifestyle study is one of the largest in the world looking at the effects of diet, lifestyle and complementary treatments on breast cancer and long-term survival. Support is vital for Against Breast Cancer if it is to continue its innovative research to develop ways to improve detection and survival after diagnosis so women and men can look forward to a future free of breast cancer.

Regis Classic Tour
Run by a team of voluntary lady marshals ably assisted by their menfolk, the Regis Classic Car Tour aims to visit and explore a different area of the country each year, enjoying local food and drink and celebrating what is unique and special in that area.
Each year they try to raise as much money for charity as possible whilst enjoying a fun, social weekend with like-minded folk and their cherished classic cars.
