Travel just an hour from the M25 and you’ll reach the East Sussex town of Rye, which lies in an area with a rich maritime history, and a hint of past smuggling scandals.

Rye also has a rich literary tradition, with a whole host of writers either living in, or inspired by the town. Look out for references to Beatrix Potter, William Thackeray and Frances Hodgson Burnett. Further details on notable people and events from the towns past can be found in Rye Museum, while the Ypres Tower, Martello Towers and English Heritage owned Camber Castle, illustrate the built heritage of the area.

All the family will enjoy a visit to Rye, with a vast variety of activities on offer. Bird Watching, Cycling, Windsurfing, and visits to Winchelsea Beach and Camber Sands Beach, are just some of the things on offer. To find out more, you’ll just have to hop down the motorway and pay a visit.
