Woman dies as she prepares to do charity abseil

A 96-year-old woman has collapsed and died just moments before she was due to abseil from the roof of a hospital in aid of charity. Thrill-seeking Gertrude Painter was all ready to go from the seventy foot high roof of Crawley Hospital when she was taken ill. Efforts were made to revive her at the scene but she was unfortunately pronounced dead.

The rest of the charity event was called off after the tragedy. Gertrude, who was known as Gertie, was one of about fifty people taking part in the sponsored abseil from the hospital in West Sussex. The event was in aid of 4Sight- West Sussex Association for the Blind, a charity which aids blind and partially-sighted people in the county.
